Exclusive Interview: Actress Ngozi Nwosu Opens Up on Her Latest Film, ‘Broken Portrait’

Renowned actress and producer Ngozi Nwosu has been making waves in the Nigerian film industry for decades. With a career spanning over three decades, she has appeared in numerous films, including the classic 1992 movie, ‘Living in Bondage’. In an exclusive interview with Pulse Nigeria, Nwosu spoke about her latest project, ‘Broken Portrait’, an upcoming film written by Eyo Emmanuel and directed by Richmond Amechi.

A Sensitive Storyline

‘Broken Portrait’ follows a family dealing with the drug addiction of one of its members. Nwosu, who plays Ezinne Idahosa, the mother of a crippling drug addict, spoke about the emotional nature of the film. “The story is so emotional. In fact, at some point during the shoot, I had to take a moment for myself. It’s a story that will have you fully immersed,” she said.

The Uniqueness of the Story

Nwosu also praised the uniqueness of the story, which she believes sets it apart from other films. “First, it was the storyline, I loved it and I knew I could do it, I took it. Then it was the uniqueness of the story. It is told differently,” she explained.

The State of Nollywood

During the interview, Nwosu also spoke about the state of the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood. She lamented the fact that some people who are not supposed to be producers are now producers, and that the industry is saturated with too many films. “Nollywood has improved tremendously. We do have some problems though. For example, a lot of people who are not supposed to be producers are now producers. Everybody is after the money. Once there’s money in their hands, they want to make a film,” she said.

Acting as a Lovable Career

Despite the challenges facing the industry, Nwosu maintains that acting is a lovable career. “Acting is a lovable career. Sometimes you’re emotionally linked to the characters you play, but you have a job and must deliver,” she said.

‘Broken Portrait’

Speaking more about ‘Broken Portrait’, Nwosu empathized with individuals struggling with drug addiction and their loved ones who have to deal with it. She also urged parents to be keen on their children’s well-being so they can correct some behaviors quickly.

What She Looks for in a Role

When asked about what she looks for in a role, Nwosu said that the story has to work for her, and the role she is required to play is another thing. “The story has to work for me. The role I am required to play is another thing. Then, the money. Sometimes the money isn’t such a focus for me if the story is excellent. That is why I accepted to be in Broken Portrait,” she said.
