Kenyan Court Halts Police Ban on Protests in Capital

In a significant turn of events, a Kenyan court has temporarily lifted a police ban on protests in the capital, Nairobi, just hours before a planned demonstration was set to take place.

On Wednesday, the acting police inspector general banned protests in the central business district (CBD) and surrounding areas indefinitely, citing a lack of leadership that would ensure peaceful protests. However, the Milimani law courts in Nairobi disagreed with the decision and ruled that the ban remains suspended pending the hearing and determination of a petition filed by a Kenyan NGO challenging the police directive.

The suspension came as a relief to thousands of protesters who had planned to march to the president’s office in defiance of the ban. Police had deployed heavily around the CBD, patrolling the streets and cording off major roads leading to the president’s office.

The protests in Kenya have been ongoing for a month, with the capital serving as the epicenter of the youth-led movement. The government has accused police of using excessive force against protesters, leading to the death of several individuals. In response, Japheth Koome, the former inspector general, resigned amidst widespread criticism.

The government spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, appealed to protesters to embrace patriotism and find alternative ways to express their grievances. Meanwhile, the economic impact of the protests has been significant, with the government estimating losses of over $45 million.

As the situation continues to unfold, the court’s decision has given protesters a reprieve and raised hopes for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
