Crime Rate Declines in Nigeria, Says Inspector General of Police
In a significant development, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has revealed that the rate of crime in Nigeria is on the decline. Egbetokun made this announcement following a routine security meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where all Service Chiefs briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on the country’s security situation.
According to the Police Chief, the security personnel will continue to deploy synergy to maintain the tempo achieved so far. When asked about the outcome of the meeting with the President, Egbetokun said that Mr. President was satisfied with their report and has challenged them to continue working together to improve their synergy.
The Inspector General of Police also revealed that his records show a decline in reported crimes across the country. “Records don’t lie; the records are there, and I can assure you that we will continue to do what we’re doing to maintain the decline in the crime rate,” he said.
In a related development, Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, said that the country is relying heavily on oil production revenue and cannot afford to back down on securing oil installations. Musa disclosed that Nigeria has been handed a mandate to restore full oil production benchmark of 2.1 million barrels per day (bpd), and they are bent on achieving this target.
“Nigeria relies a lot on what we produce, and it’s our mandate to restore full production. We are targeting 2.1m bpd, which is achievable, and we are taking steps to ensure that all required steps are taken,” Musa said.
The Chief of Defence Staff also commended the communities for their efforts, saying that the President is aware of the issues and will address them to ensure continued production. He warned that those engaged in criminal activities, including stealing oil installations, will face the consequences and that Nigeria needs to work together to achieve success.
