MLB All-Star Game Sees Slight Bump in Viewership, Home Run Derby Experiences Decline

The 2024 MLB All-Star Game saw a slight increase in viewership compared to the previous year, but the overall number remains the second-lowest in the event’s history. According to the Associated Press, the game drew 7,443,000 viewers on Fox, a 6% increase from the 2023 game. However, this number is still lower than the 7.51 million viewers who tuned in for the 2022 game.

The American League’s 5-3 win over the National League saw a 437,000-viewer increase from the previous year’s game. The game’s rating was a 3.8, with a share of 12, which is down slightly from last year’s 3.9 rating with the same share.

Spanish-language coverage on Fox Deportes brought in 116,000 viewers, a 36% increase from the year prior. This growth in viewership is a positive sign for the league, as it indicates a growing interest in the game among Spanish-speaking audiences.

In contrast, the Home Run Derby, which took place on Monday, saw a decline in viewership. The event, won by Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Teoscar Hernandez, drew 5.45 million viewers to ESPN, an 11% decrease from the 6.11 million viewers who tuned in for the 2023 event. This decline is a concern for the league, as the Home Run Derby is typically one of the most popular events of the All-Star weekend.

Overall, while the MLB All-Star Game saw a slight increase in viewership, the league will need to continue to find ways to grow its audience and increase engagement if it wants to maintain its popularity in the years to come.
