Ebonyi State’s Local Government Elections: Governor Francis Nwifuru Expresses Hope for Peaceful Polls
In a significant development, the local government elections in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, have concluded with an impressive turnout across 171 wards and 13 local government areas. According to eyewitnesses, the poll, monitored by Media Talk Africa, was peaceful and conducted without any major incidents.
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, who cast his vote at the 002 Edukwuokemini Polling Unit, Anyawu Ward in Oferekpe Agbaja, Izzi Local Government Area, expressed his satisfaction with the conduct of the election. “I am very delighted and excited that despite the rain, people are coming to vote. It gladdens my heart and encourages me,” he said.
The governor also expressed his support for the democratic election of local government chairmen, stating that it is essential for a society like theirs. “The government needs to be close to the people and it should be the person that the people elect because if the people elect you, you will have that responsibility to meet up with the promise you made to the people during the campaign,” he said.
Regarding local government autonomy, Governor Nwifuru agreed with the Supreme Court’s judgement in many areas, but expressed some reservations. He said that the governors are still studying the judgement and will come together to discuss the outcome.
“I believe in a democratically elected chairman in our local government system. I believe in that and that is what the constitution says,” the governor emphasized.
The elections are seen as a crucial step towards ensuring greater representation and accountability in local government affairs. As the results are awaited, hopes are high that the process will be peaceful and successful, with Governor Nwifuru’s words of encouragement offering a sense of optimism for the future.
