Tinubu Admin Warns Protesters Ahead of August 1 Nationwide Protests

Nigeria’s CNPP Warns Government Against Crackdown on Protesters

As Nigeria prepares for a nationwide protest on August 1, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has warned the Federal Government against attempting to clamp down on individuals and groups perceived to be enemies of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

The planned protest, mobilized with the hashtags #TinubuMustGo and #Revolution2024, is a response to the biting hardship faced by Nigerians due to the increasing cost of living and loss of jobs and businesses. The CNPP, an umbrella body of Nigerian political parties and political associations, has urged the government to focus on addressing the genuine concerns of suffering Nigerians rather than silencing those who are speaking out.

In a press statement, the CNPP raised the alarm over the government’s antics of pointing accusing fingers at individuals and groups over the rumors of looming massive protests in the country. The association warned that clamping down on individuals and groups could escalate the situation, as seen in Kenya recently.

The CNPP also urged President Tinubu to take immediate action to address the concerns of suffering Nigerians, including cutting down the cost of governance by 60 per cent. The association suggested reducing the number of ministers in the cabinet, as well as other appointees, and slashing the allowances of public office holders.

The CNPP emphasized that the government must prioritize the welfare of the people, rather than protecting the interests of a few privileged individuals. The association also demanded that the Nigerian governments at all levels take immediate steps to cut the cost of governance and reduce waste, corruption, and extravagance.

As the protest approaches, the CNPP vowed to continue monitoring the situation and will not hesitate to take constitutional actions if the government continues to ignore the concerns of Nigerians. The association urged all Nigerians to join them in demanding that the government takes steps to cut the cost of governance and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

The situation in Nigeria remains tense, with many Nigerians expressing frustration and desperation over the country’s economic woes. The CNPP’s warning to the government highlights the need for a more effective and responsive approach to addressing the concerns of the people.
