World leaders pay tribute to Joe Biden following US presidential race withdrawal
Global leaders have rallied around former US President Joe Biden, praising him for his dedication to public service and his commitment to democracy. Biden announced on Sunday that he would be withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, citing concerns over his age and health condition.
The reactions from world leaders were swift and unanimous, with many expressing respect for Biden’s decision and appreciation for his achievements as President.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Biden for his unwavering support during the war with Russia, calling him a “tough and strong leader.” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk praised Biden for taking many difficult decisions, saying that Poland, America, and the world are safer and more stable as a result of his leadership.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Biden as a “remarkable politician” who had made his decision based on what he believed was best for the American people. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also paid tribute to Biden, saying he had achieved a lot for his country, for Europe, and for the world.
Other leaders, including Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, also praised Biden for his service and leadership.
Notably absent from the tributes was Republican former President Donald Trump, who took a bitter tone in a statement on his social media platform. “Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve,” he wrote.
Former President Barack Obama, with whom Biden served as Vice President for two terms, praised Biden’s record in office, saying he had restored America’s standing in the world, revitalized NATO, and mobilized the world to stand up against Russian aggression in Ukraine.
The tributes to Biden highlight his enduring international reputation as a leader who has promoted democracy, stability, and cooperation across the globe.
