Nigeria Customs Warns Against Use of Used Tyres to Prevent Road Accidents

Nigeria Customs Service Warns Against Using Second-Hand Tyres

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged Nigerians to refrain from using second-hand tyres, also known as “tokunbo tyres,” to prevent road crashes. The warning was issued by the Comptroller of the Ogun 1 Area Command, James Ojo, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ota, Ogun.

According to Ojo, the use of second-hand tyres is one of the factors contributing to road crashes in the state and Nigeria at large. He advised the public to buy new tyres instead of used ones, as they would last longer and be safer on the highway.

Ojo explained that many second-hand tyres have exceeded their recommended lifespan from their manufacturing dates, making them unsuitable for use on Nigerian highways. He emphasized that using such tyres beyond their recommended lifespan can pose a significant risk to motorists and put their lives in jeopardy.

The comptroller reiterated the NCS’ commitment to protecting the local economy and ensuring safety on the roads, as well as upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders.

The warning comes as a timely reminder to Nigerians to prioritize road safety and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents. With the current economic situation in the country, it is essential to consider the long-term benefits of investing in new tyres rather than opting for cheaper, used alternatives.
