Gunmen Involved in Attack on Edo APC Governorship Candidate Go into Hiding
The Police in Edo state have revealed that the gunmen involved in the attack on Monday Okpebholo, the APC Governorship Candidate for Edo and the state’s reinstated deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, have gone into hiding. The attack occurred on July 18 on Airport Road in Benin.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, the gunmen fled the state after the attack, which left an Inspector of Police, Onu Akon, an orderly to Okpebholo, dead and many others injured.
The Commissioner assured the public that the perpetrators would be brought to justice, stating that investigations are ongoing to unravel the mystery surrounding the killing of the gallant officer and attempted murder of Okpebholo. He also mentioned that the police have dropped the invitation with the family members of those fingered in the attack, warning that if they fail to honour the invitation, appropriate legal procedure will be followed, which may include declaring them wanted.
The attack on Okpebholo and Shaibu occurred while they were exiting the Benin Airport, shortly after their arrival from Abuja. The suspected political thugs involved in the attack are still at large, and the police are working to track them down and bring them to justice.
