Charlotte Dujardin Withdraws from 2024 Paris Olympics Due to Video Showing “Error of Judgment” with Horse

Charlotte Dujardin, a renowned British equestrian athlete, has announced that she will not compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics due to a video that surfaced, showing an “error of judgment” with her horse. The video, which is from four years ago, allegedly shows Dujardin mistreating a horse at a private stable.

In a statement, Dujardin apologized for her actions, stating that the incident was “completely out of character” and does not reflect her usual training methods. She also expressed her deep shame and regret for not setting a better example in that moment.

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) has provisionally suspended Dujardin from all competitions for six months, while the British Equestrian Federation has also suspended her, making her ineligible for international and national competitions in the foreseeable future.

The FEI has condemned any conduct that is contrary to the welfare of horses and has robust rules in place to address such behavior. The organization’s president, Ingmar De Vos, expressed disappointment with the incident, stating that it is crucial to address any instances of abuse, as equine welfare cannot be compromised.

Dujardin has been a star for Britain in the Olympic Games, winning three gold medals, a silver medal, and two bronze medals over the past three Summer Olympics. Her six medals are tied with cyclist Laura Kenny for the most by a British woman. In 2017, Dujardin was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, an honor given to people for high achievements.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and debate about the treatment of horses in the equestrian sport. As the world prepares for the 2024 Paris Olympics, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the welfare and well-being of animals in all aspects of sports.
