Thieves Strike Again: 2,000 Bags of Rice Stolen from Katsina State, Nigeria
In a shocking turn of events, the Department of State Services (DSS) in Katsina State, Nigeria has recovered over 2,000 bags of rice allegedly stolen from 20 trucks donated by the federal government to alleviate the economic hardship in the country.
According to reports, the rice was donated by President Bola Tinubu to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of efforts to address the economic crisis. However, government officials in Katsina State allegedly diverted the rice, leaving many wondering how such a massive theft could occur.
The stolen rice was deposited in a store at the Central Market in Katsina, but thanks to a tip-off, the DSS swung into action and recovered the stolen goods. The officials who confirmed the theft to NAN on Thursday, however, declined further comments on the issue, preferring to remain anonymous.
The Chairman of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the state, Mr. Abdulrahman Abdullahi, expressed shock over the incident, lamenting that the Federal Government donated the palliatives to the vulnerable, only for some unpatriotic individuals to divert them.
Abdullahi vowed that his organisation would continue to follow the case to its logical conclusion and advised the government to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the culprits to book.
A resident of Katsina, Suleiman Kofar-Durbi, also commented on the issue, saying it was an unfortunate development. “It is unfortunate that I received the information yesterday night that the President provided relief to the vulnerable and some people diverted it. People are experiencing hardship due to the current economic situation in the country, the government should investigate the matter thoroughly and bring culprits to book,” he said.
This incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and accountability in the distribution of relief materials in Nigeria. As the country continues to grapple with economic challenges, it is essential that such thefts are prevented and those responsible are held accountable.
