INEC Raises Security Concerns Ahead of Edo Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concerns over security issues ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Edo State. According to Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the commission, security is the main concern of the electoral umpire in the Edo governorship election.

Yakubu made this statement in Abuja on Thursday while appearing before the joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters. He was in preparation for the upcoming off-circle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.

INEC has conducted continuous voter registration, but a few registered voters require validation. The commission is not happy with the quality of biometrics for registered voters in the states. Yakubu emphasized that it is the right of every registered Nigerian to be able to vote seamlessly, and it is the responsibility of INEC to ensure that every citizen is given the opportunity to vote.

The final outcome of the continuous voter registration in Edo will be published next week. Yakubu highlighted that one of the major problems faced by the commission is the difficulty in conducting off-cycle governorship elections, which he described as more challenging than conducting general elections.

These off-cycle elections are very difficult and very challenging for us, Yakubu said.

INEC’s concerns over security issues come as the commission prepares for the governorship election in Edo State. The election is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks, and INEC is working to ensure a smooth and secure voting process.

With the election just around the corner, INEC’s security concerns are a major concern for voters and political parties alike. The commission’s efforts to address these concerns will be closely watched as the election approaches.
