Afenifere Urges Caution Ahead of Nationwide Protests in Nigeria

The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has appealed to Nigerians to exercise caution as some individuals contemplate nationwide protests in the country. In a statement, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, acknowledged that Nigerians have the right to protest, but emphasized the need to consider the general atmosphere surrounding the planned demonstrations.

According to Ajayi, the planned protests aim to draw attention to the excruciating situation in the country, with many Nigerians feeling the pinch of hardship. However, he questioned whether protest is the only means to achieve this goal, and if so, what form it should take.

Afenifere emphasized the importance of engagement as a potent instrument to call attention to the situation and decide on the best course of action. The organisation noted that the Federal Government has expressed its awareness of the challenges facing the country and has committed to engaging with Nigerians to find solutions.

The statement also referenced the experience of the #Endsars protests in 2020, which left scars in various places. Ajayi cited the example of a modern laboratory in Lagos that was destroyed during the protests, resulting in the need for tests to be taken to the United States of America.

Afenifere therefore called on relevant arms of government to engage meaningfully with the people and take manifest steps to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians within the shortest possible time.

The organisation’s appeal comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with various challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, and poor living conditions. As the country navigates these challenges, Afenifere’s cautionary message serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible and constructive engagement.
