France’s High-Speed Rail Network Disrupted by Malicious Acts, Ahead of Paris Olympics
In a shocking development, France’s high-speed rail network has been severely disrupted by a series of “malicious acts”, including arson attacks, just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. The country’s national train operator, SNCF, reported that the attacks were coordinated and carried out simultaneously overnight, targeting its Atlantic, northern, and eastern lines.
According to SNCF, the attacks were designed to paralyze the TGV network, resulting in the cancellation of numerous routes. Trains were being diverted to alternative tracks, but passengers were warned to expect significant disruptions throughout the weekend as repairs are conducted.
In a statement, SNCF described the situation as a “massive attack” and urged passengers to postpone their trips and avoid train stations. The southeastern line was the only unaffected route, as a suspicious act was reportedly foiled.
The disruptions come as Paris is on high alert for terror attacks, with heavy security measures in place ahead of the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. The parade on Friday evening will feature up to 7,500 competitors traveling down a six-kilometre stretch of the river Seine on a flotilla of 85 boats.
At Montparnasse train station, dozens of passengers were waiting for updates on their trips, after delays of up to two hours were announced. “We didn’t think it could be this bad,” said 27-year-old student Jocelyn, who had planned to travel to Bretagne but was told she might not be able to leave until Monday.
Normal traffic is expected to resume on Monday, July 29, but for now, passengers are left facing significant disruptions and uncertainty. The motives behind the attacks remain unclear, but authorities are working to resolve the situation and ensure a safe and smooth Olympic experience for all.
