Paris Olympics: Celebrating African Cultures and Athletes

The opening ceremony of the 33rd Olympiad, Paris 2024, is just around the corner, taking place on July 26th. A unique and exciting experience awaits us, as the traditional parade is replaced by a boat procession along the Seine River. This break from tradition kicks off the ceremony, not marks the end of it.

All 54 African countries have sent delegations to this year’s Games, showcasing the diversity and richness of their cultures. To celebrate this representation, get to know the men and women who will be carrying their country’s flag.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided that national delegations will now have two flagbearers, one male and one female, at the opening ceremony to promote parity. Not all countries have complied with this rule yet, however.

Here’s a look at the flagbearers from Africa’s 54 countries:

  1. Algeria – ALG: Yasser Triki (Athletics) and Amina Belhadi (Judo)
  2. Angola – ANG: Azenaide Carlos (Handball)

    … and many more.

In addition to these amazing athletes, the opening ceremony will feature approximately 3,000 dancers, artists, and other athletes. While most entertainment acts are still under wraps, it’s rumored that French-Malian star Aya Nakamura, Celine Dion, and Lady Gaga will perform.

After the ceremony, the 10,500 athletes from around the world will compete across 32 sports in 329 events. Mark your calendars for July 26th to November 11th, as the Paris 2024 Olympics promises to be an unforgettable experience.
