Community Rejects Purported Monarch, Demands Fair Election Process
In a surprising turn of events, the people of Ishienu Amofu Peoples Assembly in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State have rejected the purported emergence of Chief Michael Christian Ogbonnaya as the Igwe of Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi. The community has urged Governor Peter Mbah not to recognize anyone as the traditional ruler until a fair election process is held.
According to a statement signed by Prince I. O. Ezeoha, the Acting Chairman of Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi Peoples Assembly, no election has taken place in the community. The statement emphasized that without an election, it is impossible for an Igwe to emerge.
“It is sad that a once-respected son of Nkerefi is struggling to impose himself on the people by claiming our revered Igwe’s throne, and parading himself as our traditional ruler,” the statement alleged.
The community has demanded that the Enugu State Government, ministries, and the general public be aware that the electoral process that will give them an Igwe has not been held yet. They have also urged that when a new Igwe emerges, he will be formally presented to the relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, and the Governor.
The rejection of Ogbonnaya’s purported emergence as the Igwe of Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi is a significant development in the community, highlighting the importance of a fair and transparent election process. The people of Ishienu Amofu Peoples Assembly are determined to ensure that their traditional ruler is chosen through a democratic and inclusive process.
