Labour Party Warns Self-Proclaimed Chairman Against Contempt of Court
The Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern warning to Callistus Okafor, who claims to be the party’s National Chairman, against deliberately walking into jail for contempt of court. Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, made this warning on Friday in Abuja while reacting to Okafor’s chairmanship claim.
According to Ifoh, Okafor’s latest move is a repeat of his previous attempt in 2021, when he declared himself the National Chairman of the party and proceeded to court, only to fail in both the High Court and the Appeal Court. The Court of Appeal held that Okafor cannot use the Consent Judgement to make himself the national chairman of the Labour Party.
Ifoh described Okafor’s actions as those of a “dramatist who chose to dance to the gallery and entertain people.” He expressed surprise that Okafor has come up again, going against the Court of Appeal decision. The Labour Party has since moved forward, holding two successful National Conventions and producing a new set of executives led by Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman.
The party’s warning comes after Okafor claimed to be part of the 2014 National Convention of the Labour Party and unilaterally declared himself the National Chairman. Ifoh urged Okafor to respect the court’s decision and not engage in any further actions that could lead to contempt of court.
The Labour Party’s warning serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting the rule of law and the decisions of the court. It is essential for individuals to comply with court orders and avoid actions that could lead to contempt of court.
