Torrential Rains Flood Shelters in Sudan, Displaced Residents in Need of Urgent Support
Kassala, Sudan – The eastern city of Kassala in Sudan has been hit by torrential rains over the past few days, causing widespread flooding and displacement. The Kassala Youth Emergency Room has issued an urgent appeal for support to help the thousands of people affected by the disaster.
The shelters in Kassala have been severely affected, with a lack of drains and flooded latrines making the situation “catastrophic” for many residents. The youth activists are calling on the Kassala state government, international and local organizations, and anyone with water suction pumps to immediately head to the affected shelters to help drain the rainwater.
The displaced residents are in dire need of basic necessities, including food, clothes, blankets, and potable water. The Kassala Youth Emergency Room is also urging the provision of heaters and children’s clothes, as the situation is particularly dire for families with young children.
The Sudan Meteorological Authority has warned that the heavy rains could cause the water level of the Gash River in Kassala to rise significantly this evening, and is advising residents to take precautions and stay away from bridges.
This is not the first time that Sudan has been affected by flash floods. Earlier this month, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan warned of flash floods in the southern parts of the country, caused by heavy rainfall.
As the situation in Kassala continues to unfold, it is clear that urgent support is needed to help those affected by the disaster. The international community is urged to respond quickly and provide the necessary aid to help those in need.
