Lagos State Embraces Artificial Intelligence to Enhance Mathematics Education

In a bid to improve the learning outcomes of students in Lagos State, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Abolaji Abayomi, has announced plans to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to upgrade the school curriculum. This initiative was revealed during an award ceremony organized for students who have been using a technology-based platform, Darsel App, to solve mathematics problems in Lagos State public schools.

The event, held at the Education Resource Center in Ojodu, Lagos, aimed to add more value to teaching and learning, particularly in mathematics. Abayomi encouraged students and teachers to harness the power of AI platforms to hone their skills and stay ahead in the digital age.

The Darsel App, adopted by the Lagos State government, has already recorded over 10,000 students’ usage across 100 schools in the six educational districts in Lagos. According to the implementation partner, Mrs. Wunmi Tolu-Alalade, the app has enabled students to solve over five million mathematics questions in the last 15 months, resulting in better learning outcomes.

The app’s ability to provide real-time feedback and support has been particularly beneficial for students and teachers. Tolu-Alalade emphasized that the app will continue to be upgraded to incorporate all Junior categories in Lagos State from JSS1 to JSS3, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive mathematics education.

The CEO of Darsel, Mr. Abdulhamid Haidar, emphasized the importance of education technology in shaping the future of learning. He expressed gratitude to the Lagos State government for the opportunity to use technology in teaching students and pledged to resolve some challenges experienced during the 15-month period.

Some students and teachers who participated in the ceremony commended the Lagos State government for the partnership, citing challenges such as the availability of Android phones in boarding schools and a lack of knowledge among parents as areas that need improvement.

The Darsel App has been hailed as a unique feature that creates solutions for both teachers and students, making learning mathematics easier and simpler. The app’s success has sparked hopes that AI can be a game-changer in enhancing mathematics education in Lagos State and beyond.
