Gunmen Attack Police Station in Borno, Kill Inspector

In the early hours of Sunday, July 28, 2024, an Inspector of Police was killed in an attack at the Jakaan Police Station in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State. The gunmen, whose identities have not been confirmed, were repelled by the Police Mobile Force attached to the station.

In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Kenneth, confirmed the incident and noted that it’s early to conclude whether the attackers were Boko Haram terrorists. “Right now, we can only classify them as gunmen because their anonymity is yet to be unravelled,” he said.

This is not the first time security forces have been targeted in the state. In early February 2024, four policemen were allegedly killed and a cache of ammunition was carted away when suspected Islamic State of West Africa Province fighters attacked a police station at Gajiram, headquarters of Nganzai LG.

ISWAP fighters stormed the police station in the night, opening fire on the policemen on duty. According to a security source who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, the terrorists also set parts of the police station on fire during the attack.
