Christian Association of Nigeria Calls for Peace as Nationwide Protest Looms

The Niger chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged Christians in the state to shun the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 to 10. In a message to Christians in the state, Bishop Bulus Yohanna, chairman of CAN, in the state, cautioned against joining the protest, citing concerns that it could be hijacked by hoodlums and selfish groups to cause harm to innocent citizens.

The CAN chairman emphasized that peaceful protest with clear demands is good, but warned that it could be perceived as a threat by security agencies, leading to arrests and shootings. He cited the book of Romans 13:1-3, which advises Christians not to rebel against constituted authorities.

Bishop Yohanna also called on President Bola Tinubu to work on price control for goods and services, address rising costs of living, and reduce the price of fuel, as well as to prioritize the agricultural sector. He urged church leaders, local government coordinators, and parents to advise their members and children to shun the protest in the interest of peace.

The cleric urged governments at all levels to shun corruption, ethnic and religious bigotry, and instead promote greater accountability, fairness, and job opportunities. He emphasized the need for a peaceful and dynamic process of governance, which demands perpetual attention and constant effort to attain and maintain.

The bishop’s message was read in churches across the state on Sunday, and it appears that major stakeholders in Niger state have agreed not to join the protest. The development comes as other well-meaning Nigerians, including youths, have also declared their decision not to participate in the nationwide protest.

In a statement, Bishop Yohanna said: “Let us take advantage of the farming season especially now that the Farmer Governor is proactive and has prioritised the agricultural sector.” He added that peaceful dialogue and continued prayers for the nation are the best way forward.

With the nationwide protest looming, the Christian Association of Nigeria’s call for peace and dialogue serves as a timely reminder of the importance of calm and responsible action in the face of societal challenges.
