Human Skulls Uncovered at Ugandan Shrine

In a gruesome discovery, police in Uganda have unearthed 17 human skulls buried in metal boxes at a suspected shrine in the centre of the country. The remains were discovered on Monday by children foraging for firewood in Kabanga village, near Mpigi town, approximately 40 kilometers west of the capital Kampala.

Regional police spokesman Majid Karim told AFP that police moved in swiftly and recovered the skulls after residents reported finding metallic boxes containing the remains. “We have so far recovered 17 human skulls,” Karim said. “We are conducting more excavations to ensure there are no more skulls other than what we have so far recovered.”

The police are still investigating the matter to determine the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the skulls and who could be behind this act. Karim urged the public to remain calm, saying some residents have been left in shock.

It is unclear how the skulls ended up at the site, but local media reported that residents had previously gathered at the location to worship. Police said the suspected owner of the site is on the run, having been linked to a separate case involving the murder of a prominent traditional Baganda leader, entrepreneur Daniel Bbosa.

The killing of Bbosa occurred in February this year when he was assassinated by hired gunmen as he returned home from work in Kampala. Mpigi district, where the discovery was made, is a semi-rural area that is densely populated, with agriculture dominating the local trade. Coffee and bananas are the major cash crops and staple foods, and a major road links the villages to neighboring countries such as Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

The discovery is unsettling for the local community, and the authorities are working to unravel the mystery behind the graves.
