Abia Governor Warns Against Violent Protests Amid Nation-Wide Demonstrations
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has appealed to traditional rulers, leaders of religious organizations, and community leaders to advise their people against resorting to violence, even as youths across the country plan to start a nationwide protest on August 1, 2024.
The governor expressed concerns that the planned protest, dubbed #EndBadGovernance, may escalate into violence and harm vulnerable individuals in the country. Despite acknowledging Nigerians’ right to protest against poor conditions, Otti urged youths to pursue peaceful means to express their grievances.
Otti made the appeal during a statewide broadcast to Abia residents, where he stated that some economic policies of the federal government, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, have not yet produced the desired results. He advised Abia youths to exercise restraint and engage with leaders through a charter of demands, vowing that his administration would do everything possible to protect the people from harm and destruction.
The governor emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong sense of peace and sustainable development in Abia State, instead of chaos. He highlighted his administration’s significant investments in infrastructure in Aba and Umuahia, which should be protected from those who may attempt to hijack the protest and cause mayhem.
Additionally, Otti pointed out that Abia State civil servants have received the April tranche of the Wage Award, as promised by his administration, among other commitments. He thus pleaded with Abia people to shun violence and resort to peaceful means to resolve their grievances.
As the nation prepares for a potentially tumultuous period, Otti’s appeal serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible and peaceful protests. By urging leaders and community members to engage with each other through peaceful means, the governor aims to prevent violence and protect the most vulnerable individuals in the state.
