Palestinian Athletes Shine at 2024 Paris Olympics Amidst War on Gaza
In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Palestinian athletes Mohammed Dwedar and Layla Al Masri are representing their country at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 800m runners are competing under the shadow of the ongoing war on Gaza, which has had a devastating impact on the Palestinian sports community.
According to the Palestinian Olympic Committee, 400 athletes, volunteers, and sports workers have been injured or killed in the conflict. Israel’s military has been accused of deliberately targeting sports infrastructure in Gaza, further complicating the lives of Palestinian athletes.
Despite these challenges, Dwedar and Al Masri are proud to be representing Palestine on the global stage. Al Masri, who lives and trains in the United States, was invited by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete in the 800m event after not qualifying directly. She specializes in the middle distances of 1500m and 5000m.
“I think it’s huge to be able to show that we’re here, we’re Palestinians who love to compete, and we’re strong, and we belong here,” Al Masri said. “And I think those are the main takeaways of, like, we’re a people who belong everywhere that everyone else gets to be.”
Dwedar, 23, considers his participation a victory in itself. He had to leave his native Ramallah for Algeria, where he spent nearly two months preparing for the Games. With a personal best of 1:52:34, he is realistic about reaching the podium but says his biggest achievement is being here and showcasing Palestinian determination.
Palestine is represented by eight athletes in taekwondo, boxing, judo, shooting, swimming, and athletics. While only one of the athletes qualified directly, the rest received special invitations from the IOC.
As the world watches the 2024 Paris Olympics, Dwedar and Al Masri’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the Palestinian people. Despite the challenges they face, they continue to push forward, inspiring a new generation of athletes and fans around the world.
