Nigeria’s Ogun State House of Assembly Urges Youth to Engage in Constructive Conversation Rather than Protest

The Ogun State House of Assembly has issued a plea to Nigerian youths, asking them to engage in constructive conversation with the government rather than resorting to protest. This comes as the country faces numerous challenges, including high inflation rates and widespread hunger.

Speaker Oludaisi Elemide made the appeal during a plenary session on Tuesday, as lawmakers discussed a motion on a planned protest raised by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye. According to Elemide, while the right to peaceful protest is essential, it should not infringe on the rights of others.

He emphasized that the challenges faced by Nigeria are not unique to the country and are being addressed by government at all levels. The Speaker also warned that anyone embarking on a protest must do so within the bounds of the law and without resorting to violence.

Other lawmakers, including Adeleye and Damilare Bello, echoed Elemide’s sentiments, advising that the various political leaders should work together with security agencies and youth groups to promote peace and tranquility.

The lawmakers acknowledged that Nigerian youths have the right to peaceful protest, but emphasized that other citizens also have the right to move about freely without hindrance. They urged the youth to engage in constructive dialogue with the government, highlighting the need for collaboration and peaceful resolution of issues.

As Nigeria navigates its current challenges, the Ogun State House of Assembly’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of peaceful coexistence and constructive engagement in the pursuit of a better future for all citizens.
