Imo NURTW Chairman Warns Members Against Nationwide Hunger Protest
The Imo State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Samuel Udeh, has urged members of the union to resist the temptation of joining the planned nationwide hunger protest scheduled for August 1. According to Udeh, the protest would cause more harm than good and may be hijacked by miscreants and hoodlums with evil intentions.
Udeh made the warning during an emergency meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the union held in Owerri on Tuesday. He noted that while peaceful demonstrations are a constitutional right, this particular protest had been abused and wrongly carried out, causing more pains, sorrows, and setbacks.
The NURTW boss emphasized that dialogue with leaders remains the best approach to getting things done rightly in the country, rather than resorting to protest. He expressed concern that the protest could be hijacked by those with evil intentions, leading to destruction of lives and property.
Some executive members of the union agreed with Udeh’s stance, commending him for calling the meeting and providing a platform for members to know the union’s position on the protest. They acknowledged Udeh’s efforts in fighting for the general good of members and his commitment to carrying them along in the scheme of things.
The members also asserted that the protest would not favor them as drivers, but would rather be to their own detriment, and vowed not to be part of it.
