Rotary Club of Abuja Maitama Calls for Support for Breast Cancer Patients in Neglected Communities
In a heartfelt appeal, the President of the Rotary Club of Abuja, Maitama, Rtn. Rosemond Favour Uche, has urged Nigerians to come together to support breast cancer patients in neglected communities. The plea was made during a treatment programme for cancer patients in Guidna Village, a suburb of Abuja.
Uche emphasized that the cost of diagnosis and care for breast cancer is a significant burden for indigent women, who are often the primary breadwinners for their families. She emphasized the importance of partnerships with individuals and organizations dedicated to the cause of breast cancer, and called on all Nigerians to support these efforts.
The Rotary Club of Abuja Maitama has partnered with Silver Cross Hospital, which has been performing free surgeries for breast cancer patients. Uche explained that the hospital’s Medical Director has made a significant impact by providing free surgery to underprivileged areas, rather than focusing on wealthier neighborhoods.
A past President of the club, Rtn. Yusuf Alli, added that cancer is one of the most challenging diseases globally, and that offering services in a modest village like Guidna is a testament to serving humanity and God.
The hospital’s Medical Director, Patric Ezie, appreciated the club’s intervention and called on the government and well-meaning Nigerians to emulate Rotary’s efforts by assisting indigent cancer patients. He emphasized that breast cancer is a huge financial issue, and that the hospital is already doing its best to ensure that women have access to surgery, treatment, and drugs.
Ezie also urged Federal hospitals to follow suit, stating that it would not take much to provide free breast cancer surgery for women, even if it’s just for 100 women.
The Rotary Club of Abuja Maitama’s efforts highlight the importance of providing access to healthcare for all, regardless of socioeconomic status. By supporting breast cancer patients in neglected communities, the club is demonstrating its commitment to humanitarian work and its dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of those in need.
