In a shocking turn of events, Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onwenu has passed away, leaving the entertainment industry and her fans in mourning. Tributes have been pouring in from fellow artists, colleagues, and admirers who are expressing their sadness and gratitude for her contributions to the industry.
Ayuba, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), praised Onwenu’s immense contributions to the growth of the entertainment industry, saying that her spirit, good works, and legacy would forever live on. “I celebrate the life of our beloved Onyeka Onwenu. Though she may have been taken from us too soon, her spirit, good works will forever live on in the memories we cherish and the love we shared,” Ayuba said.
Nigerian singer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, also paid tribute to Onwenu on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “The Igbo nation mourns the loss of this iconic figure, whose impact transcended the entertainment industry.”
Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti, expressed shock at Onwenu’s passing, saying, “Shocked, waking up to very sad news of the passing of Mrs Onyeka Onwenu. Rest in peace Ma, your beautiful voice will live forever. Condolences to her family and loved ones.”
Nigerian “Galala” singer, Daddy Showkey, shared a photo of Onwenu on his Instagram page, writing, “RIP Great Legend Onyeka Onwenu. Nobody know the news wey you go hear when you wake up in morning.”
In a career spanning over three decades, Onwenu has released numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.” She has also acted in several Nollywood films and has won numerous awards for her contributions to music and film. Additionally, she has been involved in politics, holding positions such as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.
