Olympic Dispute Takes a Cheeky Turn with Pizza Hut Promotion

The Olympic Games are meant to bring nations together, celebrating the heights of human athleticism. However, the spirit of unity is often tested by petty squabbles and conflicts. One such quarrel has emerged at the Paris 2024 Games, involving a pizza promotion in Hong Kong and Macao that has taken a cheeky jab at Italy.

Pizza Hut announced that customers in Hong Kong and Macao can add pineapple to their pizzas for free until July 31. The promotion comes with a tongue-in-cheek message, advising customers to "choose the Italian style and add pineapple" or opt for a "Hawaiian style with pineapple, starting from $139 [$US18]." The post features a graphic showing a fencer with three pineapple rings threaded on their sword, which some might find humorous.

This lighthearted potshot didn’t come out of nowhere. It was launched in response to Hong Kong’s defeat of Italy in fencing for gold at the Paris Olympics. The Italian Fencing Federation (IFF) filed a formal protest against the results, citing the referees’ home countries of Taipei and South Korea, which are allegedly too close to Hong Kong. However, many online users have attributed this complaint to anti-Asian racism.

The gold medal match between Hong Kong’s Ka Long Cheung and Italy’s Filippo Macchi ended with a score of 15-14, with Cheung emerging victorious after a video review of a third contentious point was ruled in his favor. Macchi accepted his silver medal with class and grace, acknowledging fans who felt he was robbed of gold but considering himself fortunate to have come in second.

Italy’s apparent sore loser behavior wasn’t confined to IFF officials. People from both Italy and Hong Kong took to social media to insult each other, with comments ranging from sharing offensive food combinations to aggressive and mean-spirited attacks. However, Macchi’s mature response has earned him respect from many, and he will have another chance to win gold in the men’s foil team quarter-finals next week.

In the midst of controversy and negativity, Pizza Hut’s cheeky promotion has brought a touch of humor and lightness to the situation. It’s a reminder that even in the face of disagreement and conflict, there is always room for levity and good-natured jest.
