Renowned Musician and Legendary Music Icon Femi Anikulapo-Kuti Pays Tribute to Late Onyeka Onwenu
The music world is in mourning as news of the passing of legendary music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, has been confirmed. The 68-year-old Onwenu, known as the "Elegant Stallion," passed away on Tuesday night at Reddington Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.
Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, renowned afrobeat musician and son of the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has joined the growing list of those who have paid tribute to Onwenu. In a heartfelt statement on X.com, Anikulapo-Kuti tweeted, "Shocked, waking up to very sad news of the passing of Mrs Onyeka Onwenu. Rest in peace Ma. Your beautiful voice will live forever. Condolences to her family and loved ones."
Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, also expressed sorrow over Onwenu’s passing, describing it as "shocking and extremely tragic." In a statement, Ezekwesili eulogized Onwenu as a distinguished Nigerian who brought joy and laughter to many through her versatile artistic endeavors.
Ezekwesili celebrated Onwenu’s life, highlighting her exceptional talents as a journalist, newscaster, songwriter, musician, performer, actor, and producer. She recalled Onwenu’s epic BBC World documentary, "A Squandering of Riches," which remains one of the greatest narrations of the same issues that continue to ail governance in Nigeria today.
Onwenu’s political career followed in the footsteps of her father, D.K. Onwenu. Ezekwesili fondly recalled Onwenu’s tribute to her mother, Dame Hope Onwenu, in the song "Ochie Dike Mama," which has become an anthem for mothers since 2010.
The music world will miss Onyeka Onwenu, a true legend who left an indelible mark on the industry. May God comfort and grant divine peace to her two sons, siblings, and the rest of the Onwenu family.
