Fat Joe Blasts J. Cole for Ruining His Legacy with Kendrick Lamar Apology
The Drake and Kendrick Lamar rap beef sent shockwaves throughout the hip-hop community, and its effects extended beyond the two rappers to another prominent artist. Fat Joe recently expressed his disappointment with J. Cole, claiming that the Dreamville rapper ruined his legacy by apologizing to Kendrick Lamar after releasing "7 Minute Drill" and subsequently removing himself from the feud.
In an interview with the Jay Shetty Podcast, Fat Joe opened up about his beef with 50 Cent, stating that he was having a great time with the rapper at a game recently. However, when asked about the Cole-Lamar feud, Joe took a different tone. "When you’re called out in Hip-Hop, you gotta respond," he said. "I’m a big fan of J. Cole, but it started from that."
The Terror Squad leader acknowledged that Cole had valid reasons for not engaging in the lyrical battle, but felt that his approach was not well-received. "He probably saw that it could get real messy and real ugly, so he said, ‘Yo, you know this ain’t me, I don’t want no parts of it,’" Joe said. "But, he definitely got a stripe off. They took a stripe off that because in Hip-Hop, when they call you out, you come out."
J. Cole’s name was invoked in the beef when Kendrick Lamar called out both Cole and Drake on Future and Metro Boomin’s "Like That" in late March. Cole responded with "7 Minute Drill" in early April, but doubled back two days later with an apology at the Dreamville Festival. In his speech, Cole expressed remorse for his actions and asked for forgiveness. "That was the lamest, goofiest sh*t," he told the audience. "I pray that God aligns me back on my purpose and on my path."
The apology was followed by Cole’s removal of "7 Minute Drill" from his latest project, "Might Delete Later." Although he did not release any additional tracks, his name continued to appear in various songs throughout the middle of April to early May.
Fat Joe’s comments highlight the lingering impact of the beef on the hip-hop community, as artists continue to navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries. As the genre’s landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this latest controversy will shape the futures of those involved.
