Libyan Athletes Focus on Breaking National Records at Paris Games

In a bold move, six Libyan athletes have arrived at the Paris Games, eager to make a splash in five different sports: athletics, rowing, shooting, swimming, and weightlifting. While their expectations may be modest, their determination to break national records is palpable.

Mohamed Bendella, a skilled shooter, is the only athlete who qualified outright for the Games. The rest of the Libyan contingent has been handed wildcards, a testament to their potential and the country’s growing interest in competitive sports.

Despite the lack of medal aspirations, athletes and officials alike agree that this trip is about more than just competing. It’s about setting new standards and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. As one athlete noted, "We’re not here to win medals, but to make our country proud and improve our national records."

Swimmer Yousef Abubaker, a specialist in the 100m backstroke, will have to adapt to a new event – the 100m freestyle. But he’s undaunted, hoping to learn from his competitors and gain valuable experience in the pool. Weightlifter Ahmed Abuzriba, meanwhile, will take on the 102kg category, a challenge that will test his strength and endurance.

The Paris Games offer a unique opportunity for Libyan athletes to gain exposure, network with international competitors, and develop their skills. With their sights set on breaking national records, these six athletes are ready to make their mark on the global stage.
