Qualcomm May Unveil New Snapdragon X Series Chipsets in September

Qualcomm, the US-based chipmaker, is reportedly preparing to announce new Snapdragon X series chipsets as early as next month. The company had introduced its Snapdragon X series processors in April, which are currently the only chipsets available for consumer laptops that meet the specifications required for Copilot+ PCs.

The dedicated Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) in the Snapdragon X series chipsets is capable of 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS), meeting Microsoft’s qualifications for Copilot+ PCs, which requires at least 40 TOPS. Whether the new X series chips will surpass the NPU performance of existing Qualcomm processors remains unknown.

At Qualcomm’s Snapdragon India event earlier this week, Kedar Kondap, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Compute and Gaming, hinted that more X series chipsets could be announced in September. According to a report by FoneArena, Kondap may be alluding to the upcoming Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) 2024 event in Berlin, a consumer electronics trade show.

The company is expected to introduce new variants of the Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite chips, or potentially new stock-keeping units (SKUs) of existing processors. There are currently three SKUs for the Snapdragon X Elite, with each chip having minor performance and efficiency differences and varying costs.

Additionally, Qualcomm is also rumored to announce the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 mobile platform in its annual event in October, which will feature its in-house Oryon CPU and a dedicated NPU. The new chipset is expected to boast a significant improvement in the Adreno 750 GPU’s power efficiency, but may only see a single-digit CPU performance increase.

Only time will tell what Qualcomm has in store for its fans, but the announcement of new Snapdragon X series chipsets next month could be a significant development in the world of consumer laptops and mobile technology.
