Nigeria’s Tech Hub Destruction: A Blow to Innovation and Youth Empowerment

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has expressed dismay and disappointment over the destruction of a technology hub, the Nigeria Communication Commission Industrial Park in Kano. The hub, designed to support the country’s technical talent accelerator program (3MTT), was set ablaze and looted during hunger and hardship protests on Thursday, just days before its scheduled launch.

According to Tijani, the Digital Innovation Park was intended to host various initiatives, including the buildathon holiday maker program for secondary school kids starting next week. The minister highlighted the immediate impact of this destruction on planned initiatives, emphasizing the setback for the journey to deepening the workforce for technology and creating job opportunities for the youth.

"It’s sad to learn that our Digital Innovation Park in Kano, slated for launch next week to support our technical talent accelerator (3MTT), has been set ablaze and looted by protesters," Tijani said in a statement posted via X on Thursday. He characterized the damage as a significant loss, citing millions of Naira down the drain.

The destruction of the tech hub comes as a major blow to Nigeria’s efforts to drive innovation and economic growth. The incident not only sets back planned initiatives but also raises concerns about the future of technology development in the country.
