Naira Strengthens Against Dollar Despite Nationwide Protests in Nigeria
Despite widespread protests in Nigeria against poor governance, the country’s currency, the Naira, continued to gain strength against the US dollar. According to FMDQ data, the Naira appreciated significantly on Thursday, reaching N1570.00 against the dollar, up from N1608.73 on Wednesday.
This impressive gain represents an increase of N38.73 against the dollar compared to the previous day’s exchange rate. The Naira’s appreciation was not limited to the official market, as it also strengthened in the parallel market, reaching N1600 per dollar on Thursday from N1610 exchanged the previous day.
What’s striking is that this is the second consecutive day the Naira has recorded a gain against the dollar, with a total appreciation of N51.12 in the last 48 hours. This unexpected trend has occurred despite the country’s nationwide protest, which led to the closure of banks and businesses in major states.
The protests, which were sparked by the government’s poor handling of the economy, are a worrying sign for the country’s economic stability. However, the Naira’s appreciation may indicate that foreign investors are still confident in the country’s economic prospects, despite the current instability.
As the situation continues to unfold, the world will be watching to see whether the Naira’s gains can be sustained in the face of growing economic challenges and political uncertainty.
