Turkey Detains 99 Suspected Islamic State Members in Nationwide Raids
Turkish authorities have arrested 99 suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group in recent raids across the country, according to a statement made by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on Friday. The arrests were carried out as part of the "GURZ-4 operations" over the past three days, mainly in the western cities of Ankara and Izmir, as well as in the centre, east, and south of the country.
Yerlikaya emphasized that "we will not tolerate any terrorists" in his statement, highlighting the government’s determination to combat extremism and terrorism in the region. This latest development comes just months after the detention of 147 suspected IS members in March, which brought the total number of people suspected of links to the jihadist group to 2,919, according to Yerlikaya.
In a separate incident, local authorities revealed that two of the assailants who carried out a mass shooting at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow last March, which resulted in the deaths of 145 people and was claimed by IS, had spent several weeks in Turkey before heading to Russia. This information adds to concerns about the potential links between Turkey and IS, despite the country’s efforts to combat extremism.
As the global fight against terrorism continues, it remains to be seen whether these arrests will have a significant impact on IS’s operations in the region. Nevertheless, the Turkish government’s determination to combat extremism and protect its citizens is evident in its ongoing efforts to disrupt IS’s networks and activities.
