In a surprise move, former Deputy Chief of Staff to the President of the 8th Senate, Gbenga Makanjuola, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This news comes at a time when Makanjuola is basking in the glow of being discharged by a Federal High Court in Abuja, with a fresh verdict of N3.5 billion fraud allegations brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to sources, the resignation was conveyed through a letter addressed to the ward chairman in Irepodun local government area of Kwara State on July 30. Copies of the letter were also sent to the local government chairman and the state chairman of the PDP respectively.

Makanjuola’s resignation comes as a significant blow to the PDP, as the politician has been a long-standing party stalwart and had previously been a two-time member of the House of Representatives and close ally to the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki. In addition, he was a two-time Deputy Governorship candidate of the PDP in the years 2019 and 2023.

What is striking, however, is the absence of any information provided as to why Makanjuola made the decision to resign from the PDP or whether he has chosen to join another political party.

While speculation continues to swirl about the politician’s future, one thing is certain – this development sends a strong ripple effect through Nigeria’s political scene. With Makanjuola’s reputation and influence in play, all eyes will be watching to see where this story unfolds.
