I’m Kassim Afegbua, the Director of Media, Campaign Council for the APC in Edo State. I’m glad to share my thoughts with you on the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State.
Firstly, I think it’s a misconception to believe that the election is between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his candidate, Asue Ighodalo. In reality, the election is between Governor Obaseki and his estranged reinstated deputy, Philip Shaibu. Obaseki’s performance in office has been a subject of controversy, and Shaibu’s return to the APC is a reflection of the people’s dissatisfaction with Obaseki’s leadership.
On the issue of Shaibu’s benefits as deputy governor, I believe he should have all the full benefits of his office. It’s not about the governor’s whims, but about the law and the constitution. Shaibu is the legitimate deputy governor, and he should enjoy the benefits that come with that position.
Regarding the killing of a police officer during an attack on the convoy of our governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, I believe it’s unfortunate and unacceptable. We’ve petitioned the IGP, President Tinubu, and other authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.
I don’t think Obaseki will win the election for his candidate, Ighodalo. In fact, I believe the election will be a referendum on Obaseki’s performance and legacy. Edo people are suffering, and they want change. The situation in Edo State is not sustainable, and Obaseki’s refusal to work on the drainage, roads, and education is a major issue.
We’re working hard to ensure that Edo State is developed and is in sync with the Federal Government. We’ve made progress in some areas, but we still have a lot to do. We’re focusing on infrastructure development, and we believe that with a APC government in Edo State, we’ll be able to achieve more.
On the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, I think it’s a positive development. It will bring more development to the grassroots level, and it will give local governments more autonomy to manage their affairs. In Edo State, local governments have been mere appendages of the state government, but with this ruling, they’ll have more control over their finances and projects.
Overall, I’m confident that the APC will win the election in Edo State. We have a good candidate, and we’re working hard to campaign effectively and win the hearts of Edo people.
