Kano Protest: Director-General Accused of Leading Thugs to Hijack Peaceful Demonstration
A civil liberty organization, Concerned Kano Citizens, has accused Baffa Babba-Dan-Agundi, the newly-appointed director-general of National Productivity Center, of leading thugs to hijack the #Endbadgovernance protest in Kano on Thursday. The group claims that Dan’Agundi, a former member of the Kano State Assembly, was sighted leading protesters to the Nassarawa royal residence, where the deposed emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, is occupying.
According to the group, the protesters had gathered to voice their grievances against the government, but the demonstration took a violent turn when Dan’Agundi allegedly arrived at the scene with a group of hoodlums. Witnesses claim that the protesters’ peaceful assembly was abruptly interrupted by the group, leading to chaos and violence.
The concerned citizens have also criticized the Kano Commissioner of Police for allowing Dan’Agundi to lead counter protests in the state. "This decision has raised questions about the impartiality and judgement of the police in handling public demonstrations," said the group.
When contacted, Dan’Agundi declined to give a definite response to the allegations, saying he won’t respond to the allegations from unknown people. Despite telling him the name of the group, and the person who signed the statement, Dan’Agundi insisted they are unknown to him.
"I can’t respond to allegations from people I don’t know. Who are they? What’s their name and address? This is a serious criminal allegation; if they have evidence against me, they should inform the police… Otherwise, this would amount to defamation…" he added.
The group has called for the probe of Dan’Agundi, who was reportedly seen in viral videos mobilising for a counter-protest. The incident has raised concerns about the state of governance in Kano and the ability of the authorities to maintain peace and order during public demonstrations.
