African Initiative Calls for Improved Healthcare Funding in Ebonyi State
The Life Transformation for Africa initiative has urged the Ebonyi State government to prioritize healthcare by creating a budget line for Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) in its 2025 appropriation. According to Programme Manager Mr Chimezie Ezeani, the absence of private sector partners in funding and supporting activities is depriving the state of valuable resources.
The initiative, a USAID-funded 5-year project from October 2020 to October 2025, is collaboration with Nigeria Resource Partners (NRPs). Ezeani emphasized that a timely capture and release of the budget line is crucial for the supervision of healthcare centers across the state.
ISS, an intervention that enhances quality improvement by ensuring adequate oversight and skills transfer to healthcare providers, has been proven to improve the performance and effectiveness of healthcare workers. Strengthening the healthcare system, according to Ezeani, enhances quality service delivery, encourages two-way communication, and fosters team building and problem-solving.
However, the current structure and placement of ISS is suboptimal, limiting its capacity to effectively engage in sector-wide implementation. Moreover, domestic financing support for ISS is inadequate, with a high dependency on donor funding. The reliance on donor funding has been unsustainable and has debilitating effects on ISS continuity.
Over the years, many health programs have been heavily funded by donors, including activities for tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and others. While donor support is essential, it is crucial to explore alternative funding mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of healthcare initiatives.
The Life Transformation for Africa initiative is urging the Ebonyi State government to address these concerns and prioritize healthcare funding to improve the lives of its citizens.
