Canada Soccer Appeals FIFA Olympics Point Deduction

Canada Soccer to Appeal FIFA Olympics Point Deduction

The "Dronegate" scandal has taken another turn, with Canada’s women’s soccer team appealing FIFA’s decision to deduct six points from their group stage score. The team will not appeal the ban on coach Bev Priestman, who was suspended and sent home from the games, nor the suspension of CSA officials Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander, or the £175,720 fine.

According to Canadian Sports reporter Ben Steiner, a hearing with the parties is likely to take place on Tuesday, July 30th, with a decision expected the following day. The appeal will be heard by the ad hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport at Paris 2024.

The six-point deduction makes it extremely challenging for the 2021 Gold Medallists to qualify, but they have given themselves a lifeline with a dramatic 2-1 win against the hosts, France, on Sunday.
