End of Bad Governance Protests in Jos: Coalition Suspends Demonstration to Facilitate Dialogue
A coalition of protest groups in Jos, Plateau State, known as the #EndBadGovernance Protest 2024 Coalition, has announced a temporary suspension of their street protests to allow for dialogue with relevant stakeholders. The suspension took effect on Sunday, August 4, and is set to last until Tuesday, August 6.
The decision was made after the coalition’s spokesperson, Mr. Enoch Vilret, briefed newsmen in Jos, capital of Plateau State. Vilret explained that the suspension was intended to enable the coalition to engage in constructive discussions with relevant authorities, as previously proposed by President Bola Tinubu.
Should the dialogue not occur within the designated timeframe, the coalition will resume its peaceful protests. However, Vilret stressed that the coalition remains committed to its cause and hopes that this pause will facilitate constructive talks.
In a remarkable clarification, the coalition spokesperson stated that it is not the organizer of the protests. Instead, it is a group of Plateau-based leaders who have taken it upon themselves to coordinate the peaceful protests.
The coalition categorically disassociates itself from any protesters carrying the Russian flag or any flag other than the Nigerian flag, stating that such actions undermine the integrity of their movement.
Concerning potential security breaches, the spokesperson expressed strong condemnation for any individual planning to incite violence, looting, or vandalism during the protests. He urged security forces to take immediate action against anyone engaging in such illegal activities.
Vilret assured that the movement remains dedicated to peaceful advocacy, and will not tolerate any form of violence or destruction. He called on all Nigerians to continue being law-abiding and to hold onto the hope that a greater future can be achieved through collective effort and peaceful means.
This development is seen as a positive step towards addressing the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, which aim to bring about changes in the political landscape of Nigeria. The suspension will provide a temporary break from the demonstrations, allowing all parties to focus on finding a constructive way forward.
