Nigerian Athlete Makes Historic Olympic Debut, Cruises into 400m Hurdles Semi-Finals
LONDON, ENGLAND – Ezekiel Nathaniel, Nigeria’s rising star in the 400m hurdles, has made a stunning Olympic debut, securing a spot in the semi-finals with a remarkable performance on Monday morning.
In his first-ever Olympic outing, Nathaniel, the national record holder, clocked a time of 48.32 seconds to finish second in heat 4, earning an automatic qualification. This impressive feat marks his fourth fastest time ever, solidifying his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the track and field world.
Jamaica’s Roshawn Clarke took the top spot in the heat with a time of 48.17 seconds, followed closely by Wilfried Happio in third place with a time of 48.42 seconds.
Nathaniel’s historic achievement marks the first time a Nigerian athlete has reached the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles at the Olympics in 12 years, since Amaechi Morton’s impressive run at the 2012 London Games.
In contrast, Nigeria’s Chidi Okezie failed to progress to the semi-finals, finishing fifth in the second heat of the repechage round with a time of 45.92 seconds.
As Nathaniel takes his place among the top eight athletes in the world, Nigerians and track and field fans globally are eagerly anticipating his next move in this highly competitive event. Will he be able to continue his momentum and make a deep run in the Olympic Games? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – Ezekiel Nathaniel has already made a lasting impact on the Olympic stage.
