BREAKING: Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Announces Record Number of New Voters Ahead of Gubernatorial Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made a major announcement ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo States, Nigeria. According to a statement by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, a total of 119,206 new voters have registered in Edo State, while 58,708 new voters have registered in Ondo State.
These figures do not include applications for transfer within the two states, which were already captured on the voter register. Additionally, they do not include applications for transfer into the two states from other states of the Federation. The figures have been integrated into the existing register, and the Commission will release the comprehensive and final register of voters to be used for the 2024 governorship elections in the next few days.
The Commission has also uploaded the analysis of new voters, which includes distribution by local government areas, gender, age, occupation, and disability, to its website and social media platforms for public information.
This announcement comes as Nigeria prepares for its gubernatorial elections, with the two states set to go to the polls later this year. The increased number of registered voters is likely to have a significant impact on the outcome of the elections, and it will be interesting to see how the different parties and candidates respond to this development.
