Social Democratic Party (SDP) Holds Successful Primaries in Imo State

Ahead of the September 21 Local Council Polls in Imo State, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has successfully held its primaries, paving the way for a peaceful and transparent electoral process. The primaries, conducted in all 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 305 registered INEC Wards in the state on August 3, 2024, witnessed a consensus-driven process where all aspirants were returned unopposed.

According to the State Chairman of the party, Amb. Ifeanyi Eluwa, the primaries took place without a hitch, with the collation of results carried out fairly by the party in Owerri on the same day. The election was observed by the Head of Election and party monitoring team from Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), Kingsley Chidi Ubah, who adjudged the exercise as being very transparent and wonderful.

"We are pleased to report that the primary elections were conducted in all 27 LGAs and 305 registered INEC Wards in the state," Eluwa said. "The process was peaceful, and all aspirants were returned unopposed. We are now ready to win majority seats in the council elections."

Ekwebelem, the leader and governorship candidate of the party during the 2023 election in the State, also expressed his satisfaction with the primaries. "We believe in good governance, internal democracy, and humanity. We will support any serious candidate to be able to win the election," he said.

With three women set to contest for councillorship seats, the SDP is looking forward to making a positive impact in Imo State’s local government administration. Eluwa has called on ISIEC to uphold its words by conducting free, fair, and peaceful council elections.

As the SDP gears up for the polls, its candidates are expected to work together to deliver a winning result. With its emphasis on internal democracy and good governance, the party is optimistic about its chances of taking over local government administration in Imo State.

For now, the stage is set for a keenly contested election in Imo State. The outcome of the polls will determine the fate of the SDP’s ambitious plans to internalize democracy and good governance at the grassroots.
