Looted Items to Be Sold Through Regulated Scrap Dealers in Gombe State

Following the violent protest in Gombe State, which saw the looting of both government and private property, the State Security Council has taken decisive action to regulate scrap dealers operating in the state. The council has directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Zubairu Umar, to develop operational modalities to oversee the activities of scrap dealers, known as ‘Yan Jari bola’.

The directive was announced by Professor Ibrahim Njodi, the Secretary to the State Government, who emphasized the need to address concerns around the activities of scrap dealers, particularly with regards to their role in helping property looters sell off stolen goods.

Njodi noted that earlier in the month, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya had hosted stakeholders to understand their challenges and sentiments before the mass action, which was intended to address grievances peacefully. However, the protest turned violent on August 1, resulting in sporadic cases of looting and damage across the state.

In his evaluation of the aftermath of the violent protest, Njodi commended the security agencies for their efforts in ensuring normalcy and stability in Gombe State during the nationwide protest. He also commended the governor for stabilizing the situation by visiting affected areas, consoling victims, and conducting an assessment to inform recommendations for government support.

Furthermore, the council acknowledged the bravery of law-abiding citizens who refused to participate in the violent protest, and urged parents to warn their children against engaging in anti-social behaviors. The council also emphasized the importance of community involvement in combating crime, as well as the need for citizens to report suspicious activities to the authorities.

Hayatu Usman, the Commissioner of Police, reiterated the government’s support for peaceful protests, emphasizing that citizens have the right to express their grievances through legal means. However, he cautioned that unlawful protest is not permitted and encouraged citizens to follow established procedures when exercising their right to protest.

According to Usman, the police would continue to work with other security agencies to contain any situation that may arise from protests, and ensure the protection of law-abiding citizens and residents.

As Gombe State works towards rebuilding and restoring order, the regulation of scrap dealers will play a crucial role in preventing further property loss and ensuring that the stolen items do not end up on the black market. With the government’s efforts to support community-led initiatives and maintain the peace, residents can breathe a sigh of relief as normalcy begins to return to the state.
