Rangers Defender Leon Balogun Targets UEFA Champions League Group Stage
Rangers defender Leon Balogun is eager to make a mark in the UEFA Champions League, with the Nigerian international setting his sights on reaching the group stage of the prestigious competition.
The 36-year-old will lead his team into battle against Ukraine’s Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of the third qualifying round on Wednesday, with victory over two legs guaranteeing a spot in the lucrative group stage.
Balogun, who signed a one-year contract extension with Rangers earlier this summer, has never played in the Champions League before, having previously featured in qualifiers for the Scottish club. However, he is determined to make up for lost time and is driven by the ambition to reach the group stage.
"I have never played in the Champions League, I have played in qualifiers before, for Rangers as well, it didn’t work out," Balogun said in a press conference ahead of the clash in Lublin. "At this stage of my career, it would be one of my biggest achievements, that is my personal motivation and I’m sure every single player who came out here today has their own individual reasons to go to the group stages."
Balogun’s motivation is clear, and he is confident that his teammates share his desire to succeed. "I think everybody is very determined to put in a performance tomorrow. It has obviously been a quick turnaround, but it is a big occasion," he added.
With the stakes high, Balogun and his Rangers teammates will be looking to make a strong impression against Dynamo Kiev, and the Nigerian international is ready to give it his all. Will they be able to overcome the Ukrainian side and secure a place in the Champions League group stage? Only time will tell.
