Devastating Flooding Hits Cape Town Suburbs
A devastating flood has struck the suburbs of Dassenberg, Riverlands, and Chatsworth near Malmesbury, leaving hundreds of residents homeless and without basic necessities. The disaster occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 8, 2024, when two retention dams burst, causing widespread destruction and chaos.
The dams, located within the municipal borders of the City of Cape Town, breached, resulting in severe flooding that affected parts of Riverlands, Chatsworth, and Dassenberg. The floodwaters swept away roads, destroyed homes, and left residents with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, was on the scene shortly after receiving reports of the flooding. He confirmed that the dam located on the property known as Dassenberg was the primary cause of the disaster.
Gift of the Givers, a humanitarian organization, was called in to assist with evacuations and provide aid to the affected communities. The organization’s spokesperson, Ali Sablay, described the scene as "total destruction," with roads washed away and people losing everything.
To help those affected, Gift of the Givers has set up a base at Riverlands Primary School, where they will provide humanitarian relief for the next [insert duration]. The organization is working closely with the Swartland Municipality and local disaster management teams to ensure that those in need receive the support they require.
As the region begins the long process of recovery, the people of Dassenberg, Riverlands, and Chatsworth are left to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives.
