Labour Minister Dr. Chris Ngige praised the newly elected President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Joe Ajaero, and urged him to lead affiliate unions responsibly. Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Ngige delivered a congratulatory message to the NLC on the successful conclusion of its 13th Quadrennial National Delegate Conference and the election of new executives. The statement, signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Olajide Oshundun, highlighted Ngige’s confidence that Ajaero’s leadership, grounded in trade‑union democracy and solidarity, would steer the NLC forward in the coming years.

Ngige recalled the NLC’s objectives and missions, wishing the new leadership success in their roles and emphasizing that their tenure should benefit both their constituents and the nation. He advised the union to guide its members truthfully and maintain accurate reporting, especially during turbulent industrial‑relations periods. Quoting Samuel Gompers, Ngige noted that “the trade union movement represents the organised economic power of the workers,” describing it as the most potent and direct form of social insurance that workers can establish, reflecting the trust placed in organised labour.

The minister also commended the NLC for conducting a peaceful and seamless Quadrennial National Delegate Conference, held from February 7 to 8. He praised the serene atmosphere at the venue and the smooth, hitch‑free election that produced the new president and other executive members of the Congress. Ngige urged President Ajaero to offer sound, even if sometimes unpalatable, advice to his trade‑union affiliates, stressing that such guidance would ease the burdens of leadership and foster better understanding and progress.
