Embiid Fires Back at French Fans Ahead of Showdown in Paris

Joel Embiid Fires Back at French Critics Ahead of Gold Medal Match

Cameroon-born American basketball star Joel Embiid has a message for the French: he’s ready to face a hostile crowd in Paris and prove his worth on the court. The defending men’s basketball champions will take on hosts France for the gold medal on Saturday, and Embiid is looking forward to the challenge.

The centre player has been booed by French crowds during the Olympics for choosing to play for the United States rather than France, despite holding French citizenship. Embiid has lived half his life in the US and the rest in Cameroon, and he doesn’t understand the criticism.

"For me, it’s all about doing whatever it takes to win the gold. So, that’s what I’m focused on. It’s all about team USA against France," Embiid said.

The Philadelphia 76ers star and former NBA Most Valuable Player awardee is also looking forward to a back-and-forth with the French fans. "I know myself, I’m going to interact. If they go boo, I’m going to go back at them and tell them, ‘suck it’. And so it’s going to be fun," he said.

The argument stems from a disagreement between the French basketball federation and Embiid. The federation claimed it helped him get French citizenship in 2022 at his direction for the express purpose of being able to play for Team France. However, Embiid has denied any quid pro quo, admitting only that French President Emmanuel Macron had called him to convince him to choose France after he had gained citizenship.

With the gold medal on the line, Embiid is ready to put the controversy behind him and focus on the game. "I’m looking forward to the match, and I’m going to give it my all," he said.

The stage is set for a thrilling showdown between Team USA and France in Paris. Will Embiid’s determination and skill be enough to silence the French critics and lead his team to victory? Only time will tell.
